The best time for a newborn photoshoot is usually between 10 and 21 days old, as babies are often sleepier and easier to gently pose. However, if your baby is older than this, it is absolutely still possible to have a beautiful newborn session. Older newborns can bring more eye contact, expressions and personality into your images.
I always say that the 10 to 21 day window is ideal for those very sleepy, curled up poses.
At this stage, babies are still naturally tucked in from the womb. They tend to sleep more deeply, and they are easier to settle into those soft, cosy positions that so many parents love.
It’s also when we can gently guide them into those classic newborn poses while keeping everything calm and comfortable.
This is where I really want to reassure you.
So many mums worry that they’ve missed their chance. Life happens. Recovering from birth, feeding, adjusting to everything… booking a photoshoot is not always the first thing on your mind.
And that is completely fine.
You have not missed out.
Little Ava came into the studio at 6 weeks old, and she was just incredible.
She gave me everything.
We still captured those soft, sleepy images, wrapped up and peaceful. But alongside that, she also gave us something extra.
Eye contact. Expressions. Little smiles. Moments of connection that you don’t always get in those very early days.
That mix is something really special.
When babies come in a little older, the session simply flows in a slightly different way.
Instead of focusing only on sleepy poses, we capture a blend of:
Calm wrapped images
Beautiful awake portraits
Eye contact with mum and dad
Little expressions and personality
There is more connection. More awareness. More of who they are already becoming.
And honestly, parents love this just as much.
Every baby is different, and I always work at your baby’s pace.
Whether your little one is 10 days or 6 weeks, I create a calm, cosy space where you can just relax.
There is no pressure for your baby to sleep.
There is no rush.
We take our time, follow your baby’s lead, and create images that feel natural and real.
If you are reading this and thinking
“I’ve left it too late…”
You haven’t.
Your baby is exactly the right age for your story.
And those tiny details, the way they look at you, the little expressions they are already showing… those are moments you will want to remember just as much.
If you’re thinking about booking a newborn session, get in touch to chat about what would work best for you and your baby. I’d love to photograph your little one.
