Why I Love Using Tartan in My Newborn Photography

There is something really special about including tartan in a newborn session.

It is simple. It is familiar. And it carries so much meaning without needing to say a word.

When families come into my Blantyre studio, just outside Glasgow, they are not only looking for beautiful images. They want something that feels like them. Something that reflects where they are from, their family, and their story.

That is exactly why I love working with tartan.

Baby Harris’s Newborn Session

Little Harris came into the studio for his very first photoshoot, and he was just brilliant from start to finish.

For his session, I brought in soft neutral tones and layered in tartan to create something that felt calm, natural, and connected to his roots.

The textures worked beautifully together. The softness of the wraps, the warmth of the tones, and the structure of the tartan all balanced each other perfectly.

Nothing felt forced. It just worked.

And that is always the goal in my newborn sessions.

Why Tartan Works So Well in Newborn Photography

Tartan is not just a pattern. It tells a story.

It connects your baby to family and heritage

Many families have their own tartan, whether it is a full kilt, a scarf, or even a small piece of fabric passed down. Including that in your baby’s first photographs creates something deeply personal.

It adds texture without overpowering your baby

I always keep my setups soft and simple. Tartan adds just enough detail to make an image interesting, without ever taking the focus away from your baby.

It photographs beautifully with neutral tones

In my studio, I often use creams, soft browns, and gentle earthy colours. Tartan sits perfectly within that palette, adding depth while keeping everything calm and natural.

Can You Bring Your Own Tartan to a Newborn Shoot

Yes, and I always encourage it.

If you have a family tartan, a kilt, or even a small piece of fabric that means something to you, bring it along. I will carefully style it into your session so it feels natural and fits with the overall look.

You do not need anything elaborate. Sometimes the smallest details end up meaning the most.

When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photography

The best time to bring your baby into the studio is between 10 and 21 days old.

This is when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those soft, settled poses.

That said, every baby is different.

Harris had moments where he was sleepy, and moments where he was wide awake and taking everything in. Both are perfect. I always work at your baby’s pace to create a calm, relaxed experience.

A Calm and Natural Newborn Photography Experience in Glasgow

One of the things parents say to me all the time is how relaxed the studio feels.

That matters.

Because when you feel calm, your baby feels calm too.

I take my time with every session. Nothing is rushed. Everything is led by your baby. That is how we create images that feel natural, connected, and real.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring tartan to my newborn session

Not at all. I have a range of fabrics and styling options in the studio. But if you have something meaningful, I always love to include it.

What if my baby does not sleep

That is completely fine. Awake images can be just as beautiful. I work around your baby, not the other way round.

Do you provide everything for the shoot

Yes. I provide wraps, props, and styling. You just need to bring your baby and anything personal you would like included.
